How to use a proxy on iPhone and iPad

iOS and iPadOS let you set an HTTP proxy for each Wi-Fi network, with a username and password. Safari and most apps then go through it while you’re on that network.

Quick setup

  1. 1Open Settings → Wi-Fi → (i) next to your network.
  2. 2Scroll to Configure Proxy → Manual.
  3. 3Enter server and port, and turn on Authentication.
  4. 4Save and test in Safari.

Your proxy details

After you buy a plan, open My proxies. Choose the Proxy Type (Rotating or Sticky), the Protocol (HTTP or SOCKS5) and a Format, then copy a line. The generator offers three formats:

HOST:PORT:USERNAME:PASSWORD

Paste into apps and anti-detect browsers that split the fields or auto-fill them.

USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT

Tools that want credentials before the address.

http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT

Code and command-line tools. This is the proxy URL used in the examples below.

In the examples on this page, replace USERNAME, PASSWORD, HOST and PORT with the values from your line. SOCKS5_PORT is the port the generator shows when you pick SOCKS5.

Residential lines are either rotating (a new IP on new connections) or sticky (one IP for the time you choose). Datacenter and ISP plans give you a list of dedicated IPs, one per line as IP:PORT:USERNAME:PASSWORD, and each line is one fixed IP.

To test a line, open https://ipinfo.io/json through it: it shows the exit IP and country. For HTTP lines you can also use the free proxy checker.

Set the proxy

  1. 1Open Settings → Wi-Fi and tap the (i) next to your network.
  2. 2Scroll to HTTP Proxy and tap Configure Proxy.
  3. 3Choose Manual.
  4. 4Enter HOST in Server and PORT in Port.
  5. 5Turn on Authentication and enter USERNAME and PASSWORD.
  6. 6Tap Save, then open https://ipinfo.io/json in Safari to check.

What it covers

The proxy applies only to that Wi-Fi network. It doesn’t cover cellular data, and the settings take HTTP proxies only, so use the HTTP port. Some apps bypass the system proxy.

Choose the country

On residential plans, add -country- and a two-letter country code to the end of the username, for example USERNAME-country-us or USERNAME-country-gb. To combine a country with a state, a city or a sticky session, build the line in the generator, which shows only the options your plan supports. Datacenter and ISP IPs have a fixed location that you choose when you buy them. Type the username with the country tag in the Username field.

Tips

  • Use a sticky line, so apps that sign you in see one IP for the whole session.
  • To stop using the proxy, set Configure Proxy back to Off.

Troubleshooting

  • Safari says it can’t open the page

Check the server and port, and that Authentication has the right username and password.More on this error →

  • Repeated password prompts

Re-enter the credentials from the generator.More on this error →

  • Wrong country

Set the country in the generator or add -country-xx to the username on residential plans, then check https://ipinfo.io/json.More on this error →

Questions

Can I use a proxy with a username and password on iPhone?

Yes. In the Wi-Fi network’s Configure Proxy screen, choose Manual and turn on Authentication.

Does the iPhone proxy work on cellular data?

No. The built-in setting only applies to the Wi-Fi network you set it on.

Can I use SOCKS5 on iPhone?

Not in the built-in settings, which take HTTP proxies. Use an HTTP line.
