How to use a proxy on Android

Android lets you set an HTTP proxy for each Wi-Fi network. It has no username and password fields, so plan for that before you start.

Quick setup

  1. 1Open your Wi-Fi network’s settings and tap Edit or Advanced options.
  2. 2Set Proxy to Manual.
  3. 3Enter the hostname and port and save.
  4. 4Use login by IP or a proxy app, because Android has no password field.

Your proxy details

After you buy a plan, open My proxies. Choose the Proxy Type (Rotating or Sticky), the Protocol (HTTP or SOCKS5) and a Format, then copy a line. The generator offers three formats:

HOST:PORT:USERNAME:PASSWORD

Paste into apps and anti-detect browsers that split the fields or auto-fill them.

USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT

Tools that want credentials before the address.

http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT

Code and command-line tools. This is the proxy URL used in the examples below.

In the examples on this page, replace USERNAME, PASSWORD, HOST and PORT with the values from your line. SOCKS5_PORT is the port the generator shows when you pick SOCKS5.

Residential lines are either rotating (a new IP on new connections) or sticky (one IP for the time you choose). Datacenter and ISP plans give you a list of dedicated IPs, one per line as IP:PORT:USERNAME:PASSWORD, and each line is one fixed IP.

To test a line, open https://ipinfo.io/json through it: it shows the exit IP and country. For HTTP lines you can also use the free proxy checker.

Set the proxy for a Wi-Fi network

  1. 1Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet (on some phones, Connections → Wi-Fi).
  2. 2Tap the gear or arrow next to your network, then the edit (pencil) button or Advanced options.
  3. 3Set Proxy to Manual.
  4. 4Enter HOST in Proxy hostname and PORT in Proxy port. Add hosts to skip in Bypass proxy for if needed.
  5. 5Tap Save, then open https://ipinfo.io/json in your browser to check.

Note: Menu names differ between phone makers, but the Proxy, Proxy hostname and Proxy port fields are the same.

The password problem

Android’s Wi-Fi proxy has no username or password fields, and apps that can’t answer a proxy login will fail. There are two ways around it.

Login by IP. Add your network’s public IP (check it at https://ipinfo.io/json with the proxy off) on the Access & API page, if your plan supports login by IP. Home IPs can change, so update the list when yours does.

A proxy app. Some Android apps connect to an authenticated proxy and route the phone’s traffic through it. Pick one that supports HTTP or SOCKS5 with a username and password.

Choose the country

On residential plans, add -country- and a two-letter country code to the end of the username, for example USERNAME-country-us or USERNAME-country-gb. To combine a country with a state, a city or a sticky session, build the line in the generator, which shows only the options your plan supports. Datacenter and ISP IPs have a fixed location that you choose when you buy them.

Tips

  • The Wi-Fi proxy only applies to that Wi-Fi network, not to mobile data.
  • Some apps ignore the system proxy entirely; browsers generally follow it.
  • Use a sticky line so apps don’t see the IP change mid-session.

Troubleshooting

  • No internet after saving

Check the hostname and port. Without login by IP, the proxy also rejects the phone for missing credentials.More on this error →

  • An app still shows your real IP

That app ignores the system proxy. Use a proxy app that routes all traffic.

  • Wrong country

Set the country in the generator or add -country-xx to the username on residential plans, then check https://ipinfo.io/json.More on this error →

Questions

Does Android support proxy authentication?

Not in its Wi-Fi proxy settings. Use login by IP if your plan supports it, or an app that supports authenticated proxies.

Can I use a proxy on mobile data?

The Wi-Fi proxy setting doesn’t cover mobile data. Use a proxy app for that.

Which proxy type works on Android?

The Wi-Fi setting takes an HTTP proxy. Use the HTTP port from the generator.
